Lori and Jim Godina have always wanted to do something they loved and to call their own. The entrepreneurial spirit ran deep in them.
Unfortunately, on December 11, 2004 everything changed for them. Jim while driving hit a patch of black ice; the car spun out of control and began to roll into the ditch. He broke his back and sustained severe spinal cord injuries. The Godina’s were told the devastating news that Jim would never walk again. It was a terrifying time, full of unanswered questions and uncertainty for their future. The fighting Slovenian spirit in Jim never gave up. Jim and Lori never believed the diagnosis, never gave up hope that he not only recover, but also would walk again. After months of physical therapy and hard work, Jim defied the odds. Miraculously he began getting mobility back, his right leg was recovering, and there was renewed hope that his future would not be spent confined to a wheelchair. In just 18 months he was standing with the aid of a brace on the left leg. He took his first tentative steps and never looked back. It was a miracle Jim was not only recovering from this tragedy, but with a new outlook on life he was ready to live his dream. They were given a second chance.
Celebrating Jim’s new accomplishment a much-needed vacation was planned. A trip to Slovenia, where Jim’s family is from reignited his love for the culture and food. The wheels started turning, how to turn this passion into a career. On a trip into Hamilton they spotted a food trailer for sale, an idea was born and the search began, taking them to the Ottawa area. This is where they found their baby Dobro Jesti. With a fresh coat of red paint the business was on its start. The Godina’s never gave up on their dream and continuously work hard to serve the best food they can. Overcoming the impossible this little red food truck is here to stay.
They are proud members of the Ontario Food Truck Association (OFTA) and supporters of Spinal Cord Injury Ontario.
